CoAction Children's Respite

The children’s respite service has been centralised since January 2010, when the new house was built in Dunmanway. There are currently forty children from West Cork availing of this service. The house can accommodate seven children to stay overnight. All children can be accommodated including children with high medical needs. The weekend commences at 3.30p.m.on Friday and ends at 6p.m. on Sunday evening. Some children prefer to come in by day only, whereas others stay overnight for one or two nights.

We try to provide a home from home atmosphere for the children. The staff are fully trained to meet the needs of the children. When a new child starts attending respite we introduce the child gradually so that they can get used to the staff, feel comfortable and make friends. The children are actively involved in choosing their own activities and meals.

Activities during the weekend include:
  • Bowling
  • Swimming
  • Cinema
  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Shopping
  • Playground
  • Attending local amenities and events
  • Arts and crafts
  • Board games
  • Outdoor games
